Ford Plummets In J.D. Power Initial Quality; Honda, Lexus, Mazda Soar

J.D. Power and Associates' 2011 Initial Quality Study (IQS) is out, and the results are interesting: 2011 is worse than 2010 in general, Ford takes a beating, dropping from 5th to 23rd, while Mazda rises from 18th to 5th and Honda and Lexus score top honors.

Lexus scores the best for the 2011 model year, with 73 problems per 100 vehicles on average. Honda moves from 6th in 2010 to second overall, with Acura, Mercedes-Benz, and Mazda rounding out the top five.
The kicker here is that vehicles launched for the 2011 model year scored 10 percent worse than 2010's launch vehicles, scoring 122 problems per 100 vehicles, up from 111 in 2010. The reason? J.D. Power cites two problematic categories: engine/transmission and infotainment/navigation systems.

Powertrain problems boil down to consumers not liking the way more fuel-economy-focused programming makes vehicles hesitate during acceleration, or the reluctance to downshift. But it's the tech-related problem that's more interesting.

Saying carmakers need to make sure their infotainment/navigation systems are "ready for prime time," J.D. Power notes that vehicle owners find the latest systems unintuitive and sometimes that they don't work as intended at all. The fix? Making the technology, "reliable, seamless and easy for owners to operate while they are driving." Seems like a no-brainer, right?

As for Ford's plummet, it fell due to it MyFord Touch system. The advanced infotainment system was criticized by owners for its lack of intuitive operation and problems with the voice command system. It wasn't all bad news for Ford, however, as the F-150 and Taurus won awards in their segments.

Honda led the overall segment win count with seven cars taking awards. Lexus scored wins for four vehicles: the ES, GS, GX and LS models. Other award winners include Chevrolet and Mercedes-Benz, each scoring class wins for the HHR and Tahoe, and GLK and E-Class, respectively. Mazda's MX-5 Miata won its segment, while Cadillac scored with the Escalade and Chrysler's Town & Country took the minivan segment.

Used car prices are at an all-time high, experts say, making this a great time to get rid of your extra or unneeded vehicles for the best possible price.

The rise in the used car market is a result of simple supply and demand. Drivers are using their cars for longer these days, many putting off buying a new car due to the economy, new car prices, and gas prices. Some people will hold onto their cars for 10 years before they decide to sell.

In addition to people holding onto their cars, new car sales are a bit slow and have been for the past few years and leasing is down. It all adds up to one thing: less used cars on the market.

Get Ready for the Summer Driving Season

Warm weather is just around the corner. Is your car ready?

Like winter, the summer driving months have their own unique challenges. While you might not curse a non-working heater, you’ll surely be just as unhappy about an AC system that doesn’t blow cold — or an engine that overheats. Maybe you’ll be wearing a T-shirt and shorts instead of a sweater — but you’ll still be just as stuck.

To dodge the bullet, take time now to think about the following:

Does your car’s AC system work?

Now (when it’s still cold) is the time to check it out; if you wait until you need it, not only will you be sweating, you’ll be waiting in line along with all the others who are trying to get their car slotted in for service.

Just as you’re more likely to get a good deal on a 4×4 in the middle of summer, you’re more likely to be able to get a fast turnaround on AC service while it’s still technically winter (or at least, still feels like it is).

Also, it’s smart policy to run the AC system during the winter months anyhow. Doing so circulates lubricant along with refrigerant — and helps keep the system in good working order.

How ’bout them bulbs?

You might not realize you’re driving around with a burned out brake light — until Johnny Law reminds you (possibly, with a piece of “payin’ paper” for defective equipment).

During the cold months, most of us try to get into and out of the car — and back to where it’s warm — as quickly as possible. So we may not notice burned out lights or other such things. This is why it’s smart to do a “walk around” of the car on the first nice day you get. Have someone sit in the driver’s seat and work the brake pedal and turn signals, emergency flashers and high and low beams. Fix anything that needs fixing.

Wipe away your cares

Next to keeping track of tire pressure, the candidate for Most Neglected Basic Check has to be failure to give the windshield wiper blades a once over — and almost certainly a mandatory replacement with a fresh set. Winter is extra hard on windshield wiper blades; cold hardens the rubber and road salt/debris ruins their “edge” — leaving you in Streak City come the next big downpour.

The general rule is blades should be replaced twice yearly, at the beginning/end of each season. The job is generally very easy; no tools or special skills required. But if you’re leery about doing it yourself, don’t sweat it. Auto parts joints that sell replacement wiper blades will usually offer to help install them (for free) if you ask.

Keeping your cool

Well, keeping your engine’s cool, at any rate. Check your records and makes sure the car’s cooling system is up to date, service-wise.

Belts and hoses are generally good for about four years from new; after that, they should be closely checked to see whether they ought to be replaced (so they don’t burst/fly apart and leave you stuck).

Anti-freeze level and condition should also be checked. You can easily check the level (engine cold!) by removing the radiator cap or checking the level in the coolant recovery tank — and topping off (with the right type) as necessary. Be sure you use the right type of coolant. Red/orange “long life” coolant and standard “green” coolant aren’t supposed to be mixed.

Be aware that even “long life” coolant doesn’t last forever — and unless you like to pay for expensive radiator/cooling system repairs/replacements, have a shop check the condition of the stuff at least every 2-3 years.

General de-gunking

Over the winter, certain areas of your car will accumulate a layer of grime that not only looks nasty, it provides a place for moisture (and eventually, rust) to get where you don’t want it. For example, the door jambs/rocker sills, the underside of the trunk, around the gasket that seals it when closed, etc.

A good time to deal with this is after you wash the exterior of the car. Using an old, throw-away towel, just wipe down the door jambs, trunk lid seal and so on. Usually, the grime comes right up. Your car will look better, the weather stripping will last longer and you’ll probably avoid rust for longer.

It’s also a good idea to pop the hood and check to see whether the drainage/venting area near the cowl (at the base of the windshield) is free of old leaves and so on. Remove/clean that area out as needed.

Inspection detection

Another small item that’s either put on the “do it later” roster or forgotten entirely is making sure all required county/state inspections are up to date.

Many states have both an annual or bi-annual smog check (emissions) as well as an annual state safety inspection — plus county decal and license plate registration, etc.

Some of these require taking a couple hours off to go to a designated inspection station and hope you don’t get stuck behind 15 other cars waiting for the same inspection you need to get. These things are best dealt with on your terms, when it’s convenient for you. Don’t wait until the day before your sticker expires. Git ‘er done ahead of the pack.

It’ll get rid of one more potential hassle before the summer driving season arrives!

Seven years and ten months after the first Mazda3 rolled off the factory floor, it has become the fastest selling car in Mazda's history.

The Mazda3 generates more than 30% of our total sales.

Senior managing executive officer of research and development at Mazda, Hirotaka Kanazawa, recently spoke about the milestone in a recent report. He said,

Want a story? Here's one from yesterday...

She was asked about a particular part located on the underside of a vehicle we had on eBay. The buyer was curious about its condition. So Airyn told him to wait a few minutes and she would call him back.

So she goes outside, finds the car, CLIMBS UNDERNEATH THE VEHICLE, and snaps a photo of the particular part.

She took the picture on her phone so she could then send it directly to the customer.

How cool is that?

ALOT of companies say they will do whatever it takes to service a customer but very few are really willing to literally get down and dirty to do it. And that is because it takes special folks like Airyn to make that happen.

Incredible Review of the 2011 MX-5

Zack Spencer of the Vancouver Sun has a great review of the 2011 MX-5:

"I can clearly remember the excitement that surrounded the arrival of the original Mazda Miata back in the late-1980s.

There was nothing like it on the road, let alone a roadster of any kind. The popularity of the Miata single-handedly brought about the revival of the roadster.

Shortly after the Miata's initial success, the BMW Z3, Mercedes SLK and Porsche Boxster arrived for drivers wanting some open-air fun. Convertible fever was back.

Over the years Mazda has resisted the urge to stray from the original concept. The Miata, now called MX-5, has always been a small, lightweight 4-cylinder in keeping with the roadster tradition made popular by MG, Triumph, Alpha Romeo and others.

The popularity of the MX-5 might have waned over the years, but it has never been more fun to drive than the current model.

THE SKIN

The MX-5 is small -but good things come in small packages. The compact dimensions provide a lightweight and nimble package that is the heart of this car. If the MX-5 was bigger it would weigh more and lose its fun-to-drive character. In addition, it is very easy to slot the MX-5 through traffic, and it's a snap to parallel park. When Mazda decided to add a retractable hardtop in 2007 they went to great lengths to minimize the amount of space it required in the trunk and only added 36kg of weight. The retractable hardtop is only available on the mid-priced GS and high-end GT trim. For almost $3,000 it is a bit expensive but worth the added protection from the elements and is safer and warmer than the base cloth roof. The silhouette might not be as attractive when the roof is up, but the MX-5 looks fantastic with the roof down.

THE COCKPIT

In keeping with the simple and classic design of the MX-5 roadster, Mazda has kept the interior as clean as it needs to be. You won't find a navigation screen, power seats or unnecessary adornments; the MX-5 is fantastic for what it isn't -bulky. Sure, Bluetooth, Sat radio, leather heated seats and a power roof are all optional but not necessary. It is interesting to note that even though this little car is low to the ground, the driver's seat is high enough in the cabin to provide a commanding view of the road, and the retractable hardtop offers excellent outward visibility. Since the driver sits higher in the car, it has a physiological effect of making the MX-5 less vulnerable in city traffic. Let's not kid ourselves, this is a little car and really only practical for a single person or couple, but the interior room is surprisingly good and the trunk puts other roadsters to shame, especially ones with retractable hardtops.

THE RIDE

All of the attention to weight reduction and Mazda's tireless improvements to the MX-5 have come together to make this classic roadster about as much fun to drive as one could hope for. Dollar for dollar the MX-5 provides as many smiles as any car on the road. With 167hp, the 2.0-litre 4-cylinder is more than willing at any speed. In the city, it has great pull away from traffic lights, and the engine has excellent mid-range torque for effortless in-town cruising. When pushed hard, the engine and exhaust note is pleasing but can be a bit tiring over a long period. The same is true on the highway as the 6-speed manual transmission is geared to keep the revs up. Engine noise is yet another reason the hardtop is worth consideration, plus it helps reduce wind and road noise on the highway. Handling is first rate, yet the suspension is supple enough for daily use. As a city commuter car the MX-5 is a wonderful alternative to buying a compact car.

THE GOOD, THE BAD

Good: With over 20 years of refinement, the Mazda MX-5 is still one of the best roadsters available anywhere.

Bad: The "chick car" handle the MX-5 has been given is way off base (sorry Lisa). This is a fantastic car for all.

ZACK'S VERDICT

With a starting price of $28,995, the MX-5 is a bit pricey and the size is limiting for duty as the sole vehicle in a household. If you are looking for a second car to augment a larger family vehicle, the MX-5 is a perfect city runabout. The compact dimensions along with the ability to drop the roof at any time can turn a boring commute into a special moment. It is too bad that heated seats are only available on the top GT trim because this is one luxury that can transform a cool spring day into a top down day. The mid-priced GS starts at almost $34,000 and the top GT seen here is almost $40,000. Keep in mind that there are no other roadsters available at the base price, only 4-seat convertibles. To get a true roadster, expect to pay a lot more. The MX-5 is like a jewel that has been polished over the past 20-plus years. It shines brighter than ever."

The Songwriting Challenge was a contest to create a jingle that we will actually use on TV and radio as well as an opportunity for someone to win $2,000!

We have close to 20 submissions which is amazing if you see how many people are on our Facebook page and the fact that each person had to write a jingle, record it, make a video of it and then upload that video to Facebook. That's a lot more work than just clicking the LIKE button!

We have such a great community of Orange County Mazda supporters and we are continually amazed at how talented and enthusiastic you all are.

Mazda Shows Off Macho SUV That Sips Gas

Mazda is showing off a fairly macho crossover SUV concept at the New York auto show that has a fairly economical powertrain.

It's being called the Minagi, a concept SUV that will be produced as the CX-5. It was given Mazda's latest design direction, one that will apply to all of its future vehicles. it's supposed to remind you of a cheetah, fastest animal on earth.

"I felt a compact SUV was the perfect vehicle to express agility and focused movement; the flexibility of four limbs moving in unison, and in an upright posture," said Masashi Nakayama, Chief Designer of the concept.

The concept also has the latest in Mazda's fuel saving technology -- SkyActiv. The goal is try to squeeze more mileage out of convention gasoline engines without having to go hybrid, with the expense and complexity.

The engines gets better gas mileage through better compression, more than a Formula One race car. The engine is more efficient, with a 15% increase in torque and 15% reduction in fuel consumption compared to the current 2-liter gas engine.

Weight of the vehicle is reduced by 10%, which also helps fuel economy. Engine friction is reduced by 30%.

Customer Service...What does it mean to YOU?

I love this video of Ross Shafer's and have used it often in training. I am about to use it again, but this time I got to thinking..."why in the world don't we make our own?" (No offense Ross!)

This little dealership I work for is awesome. We do all the right things. We're nice, we're friendly, we like you. Or do we? Well, yes indeed we like you, but do we like you the way you want us to?

Put your consumer hat on for a minute and think of two things. 1) the worst buying experience you ever had. 2) the best buying experience you ever had. Ahh...the stories, right?

But is it always about worst and best? Is there more to it? Is it that a "person" was responsible for the worst or best experience, or was it the entire company? People come and go. Companies hang around. So, now I wonder if every time I go to my dry cleaners will I always get amazing service? Or is only that when I go, I'm always helped by the owner's wife? Is it because we're about the same age, have kids the same age, she's just really a nice person? What happens when she goes on vacation? Will the dry cleaner sitter be my age, be nice, know my name, let me pick up today and pay next time? Does my dry cleaner have a Customer Service Statement? Customer Service Philosophy? Customer Service Promise? Customer Service Procedure? And if they do, are all the employees trained in how to deliver it?

If you, the consumer wanted to help me make a video about customer service for our little company, what would you want to see in it? I think a lot of companies assume they have great customer service because they are really happy about adding you to their data base and to their bottom line. Being happy promotes great service, right? (Yes, that would be sarcasm dripping from my words...)

Customer Service is my passion. I don't know why...it just is. My family thinks I'm nuts, because I really don't mind if a customer yells at me. Really, I DON'T MIND. It means my customer is passionate, too. Passionate about the way he wants to be treated. As a consumer, I happen to be every company's worst nightmare. I'm the consumer that quietly walks out, and never tells the company why. No second chance, no letter of complaint. I just take my money somewhere else. So, when a customer is unhappy and wants to talk to me, I can't wait! That means we can fix it, because WE FIX PROBLEMS HERE. I get to be the VP of Yes where I work. It means that he just might give us a second chance. It means that he's about to give our company very valuable feedback, and I just want to hug him for it. I get to say thank you for telling us what's broken. Thank goodness he's not like me!

I think Ross is saying more in his video than just a lovely story about Maria....I think he says the company she works for promotes great customer service, because they promoted an employee that gives it. When you're the customer, what do you want from the company? I'd love to know! I'll even put your name in the credits when I make our own company video. I'm thinking the title might look something like this..."Customer Service, the OC Auto Team way, as presented by our Customers".

Orange County Register Promotes our New Jingle Contest

The OCR's Register in Education program is part of a national effort called Newspapers in Education (NIE). Newspapers across the nation, including The Orange County Register, have been working collaboratively with local schools for decades to provide teachers, students, and parents with innovative teaching tools and the opportunity to use the newspaper as a living textbook.

Learning programs allow students to delve into subjects like math, science, politics, health, geography, and much more using up-to-the-minute information found only inside the daily newspaper. "The 2012 Mazda 5 is a nice little minivan. I like the swoopy new look, though I understand Mazda has already dropped this design look from the Nagare concept after getting a new chief designer. The 5 is spacious and flexible, and the dual sliding doors make for easy entry and exit.

The 157 hp felt like enough to me, and though five-speed transmissions seem so yesterday, out on the freeway I didn't find myself crying out for a six-speed gearbox.

The car feels more solid than the old model and for being based on the 3 platform, it is a zippy handler around town."

EXECUTIVE EDITOR--AUTOWEEK.COM BOB GRITZINGER: I'm not sure Mazda wants to hear this, but I could see growing old in a vehicle like this. Not that it is stodgy and soft--on the contrary, it looks quite sporting with its Nagare-inspired side strakes. It's just that it is quite comfortable and practical in every way, with easy straight-in seat height, convenient sliding rear doors and a size that makes it easy to maneuver in parking lots and in traffic lanes.

The little I4 seems somewhat overmatched at times with just a driver on board, so performance must be truly tested with a load of passengers or gear. But it's not too noisy and runs smoothly to speed, so for most driving it'd be enough to handle to work. There is some roll in the suspension, especially at the rear, so it's good that the vehicle sits low to the ground to offset that tendency. Steering is direct and steady and the brakes seem adequate.

Inside, four captains' chairs provide the bulk of the seating; two more seats fold up to create a third row. Comfort is good, and controls are all well-placed for easy operation.

Overall, this is a minivan a lot of people could live with, providing just enough space and seating in a nice tight package.

2011 Mazda3 Named Top Safety Pick

The 2011 Mazda3 was today recognized as a “Top Safety Pick” by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The Mazda3 received the organization’s highest possible crash safety rating of “Good” in all four tests conducted.

“Nearly half of all Mazdas sold in the United States are Mazda3s, so we are justifiably proud of the 2011 Mazda3 earning the distinction of the IIHS ‘Top Safety Pick,’” said Jim O’Sullivan, President and CEO, Mazda North American Operations (MNAO). “Both the sedan and hatchback models are recognized with this award, examples of Mazda’s dedication not only to producing engaging and fun-to-drive vehicles but those offering the utmost quality and safety.”

Vehicles receive ratings based on results from the Institute’s evaluations on front, side and rear impact crash tests as well as a roof strength test (implemented in 2010), which measures occupant protection in the event of a rollover. Each vehicle’s overall evaluation is based on measurements of intrusion specific to each crash angle and the injury impact on crash test dummies positioned within the vehicles at the time of collision. Only vehicles equipped with Electronic Stability Control (ESC) are eligible for testing.

The 2011 Mazda3 recently was named a “Recommended” vehicle by a leading consumer publication and the sedan model praised as its “Most Fun Small Sedan” and a “Best Vehicle Under $20,000.”

Starting at $15,800, the Mazda3 sedan is equipped with a powerful and fuel efficient 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine that offers 148 horsepower with 135 lb.-ft. of torque and an estimated EPA fuel economy rating of 25 city/33 highway (MT) and 24 city/33 highway (AT). A larger 2.5-liter, four-cylinder engine boasting 167 horsepower and 168 lb.-ft. of torque also is available for the Mazda3 sedan but standard on the five-door model. The Mazda3 hatchback starts at $20,045 and is rated with an EPA fuel economy of 20 city/28 highway (MT) and 22 city/29 highway (AT). Topping the line is the MAZDASPEED3, available only as a five-door model and equipped with a direct-injected, turbocharged 2.3-liter engine producing 267-hp and 280 lb.-ft. of torque.

All 2011 Mazda3 and MAZDASPEED3 models are equipped with a high level of standard safety features, which include six airbags (advanced dual front, front-seat mounted and full-length side curtain), anti-lock brakes (ABS) with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) with a Traction Control System (TCS), front and rear stabilizer bars, a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), a “crushable” brake and accelerator pedal assembly and collapsible steering column, three-point safety belts for all seating positions, front seatbelt pretensioners with force limiters as well as Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH).

Founded in 1959, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety is an independent, nonprofit, scientific and educational organization dedicated to reducing deaths, injuries and property damage that result from crashes on the nation’s highways and roads. The Institute, along with affiliate the Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI), supports highway safety efforts and accident prevention through vehicle crash safety tests as well as consumer education, such as driver behavior and roadway designs. Automotive Discovery posted a great article on Mazda's customer service.

It states that "J.D. Power and Associate’s 2011 Customer Service Index (CSI) shows Mazda to be among the most improved mass-market automotive brands."

The study "examines satisfaction of vehicle owners visiting service departments for repair or maintenance with five actions being considered to ascertain overall customer satisfaction with dealer service. The following five measures: service quality, service initiation, service advisor, service facility and vehicle pick-up are considered in order of importance."

"The study not only shows that customers can expect they will be more likely to have a favorable experience at a dealership according to Mazda officials, it also means that the company’s continued consistency in maintaining the value of the vehicle will make it worth more at the close of a lease. This means the Mazda is an increasingly smart choice from an ownership and value perspective."

Meet John Patterson, president of the OC Auto Team. Founded in 2004, Patterson’s OC Auto Team, which includes Huntington Beach Mazda in Huntington Beach, Tustin Hyundai in Tustin, and Tustin Mazda in Tustin, has earned its reputation as an award-winning, customer service focused company. In addition, the OC Auto Team was named as a Top Work Place by the Orange County Register in 2008, 2009, and 2010.

While meeting the customer’s needs remains a top priority, supporting the community goes hand-in-hand with that goal. A charitable donation is made for every car sold at all OC Auto Team locations. To date, over $600,000 has been donated to local schools, churches and charities. Patterson’s long range vision is to have donated $1 million by the time he and his employees celebrate their 10-year anniversary in 2014.

Q. (Bryan) Who’s at the helm?

A. (JP) The “Helm” sounds like someone on high dictating direction. While I am in charge and take responsibility for the problems that occur, I like to think that we are a cooperative organization with several leaders providing strong direction for our team. Each dealership has an excellent leadership team.

Q. (Bryan) Who makes the decisions?

A. (JP) Everyone makes decisions. I lead the big picture decision making process, but each of our managers, as well as all of our team members, have the ability to make decisions that affect the customer experience. Our goal is to make certain the experience at our dealerships is equal to the Ritz Carlton.

Q. (Bryan) Who’s the glue in your company?

A. (JP) The “glue” in our organization is not a “who” but and “it.” We are all brought together by our core philosophy – the Patterson Team Promise: “Engaged Employees, Customer Loyalty, Community Involvement and Long Term Vision.” Everyone in our organization understands that we have a four legged table where each of these principals defines who we are and how we effect our community. By working together, we have achieved tremendous growth and we look forward to continuous growth by serving these philosophies.

Q. (Bryan) Who is your customer?

A. (JP) Our New Car customer is the person that loves to drive a safe and stylish vehicle, but is budget minded – focusing on both fuel economy and an excellent value. Our pre-owned customer is anyone in the Western United states seeking an excellent value on a pre-owned vehicle from $3,000 to $40,000. Whether new or used, however, our customer is someone that values an outstanding experience.

Q. (Bryan) If you could only choose one person–for fun or business–who would you most like to have lunch with?

A. (JP) I would choose my mother. She passed away 3 1/2 years ago and I think of her often. She and my father have been wonderful parents and have shaped me into who I am today. My mother has missed the opening of two of my three dealerships and I would love to have her step foot in my stores one last time.

Q. (Bryan) What’s the secret sauce?

A. (JP) Treat every customer like they are a guest in your
home and make certain your home is a place people want to be.

Q. (Bryan) What mistakes have you made?

A. (JP) Over the past 7 years I have made several mistakes, some big and some small – but each has been a learning experience.

Q. (Bryan) What inspires you?

A. (JP) Seeing success in my organization. Success is an intangible, but you know it when you see it. Whether a sales professional or sales manager having a great sales day, or someone in my service department beaming with pride over a job well done – either way – I love seeing success and sharing it with my team.

Q. (Bryan) What frustrates you?

A. (JP) People working against each other. I liken our business to a big boat and everyone has an oar. Unless we are all rowing in the same direction, the boat will stagnate – and that frustrates me.

Q. (Bryan) If you weren’t doing what you do, what would you be doing?

A. (JP) I would be a teacher/professor – no doubt about it. In fact, 15 years from now, that might be my 3rd career. When: I opened my first dealership, Tustin Mazda, in the beginning of 2004, over 7 years ago. I worked for corporate Toyota for over 10 years prior to making the transition to becoming an automotive retailer.

Q. (Bryan) Where are your customers?

A. (JP) 80% of the customers we service are in Orange County proper. But the remaining 20% of our customers are from all over California and the Western United States. We have customers regularly fly to John Wayne Airport to take delivery of used cars.

Q. (Bryan) Why do you do what you do?

A. (JP) I am a people person that is good with numbers and in this business, these two attributes are essential. My wife says I can speak to anyone about anything … while she is exaggerating, she is not too far off.

Q. (Bryan) Why are you successful?

A. (JP) To say that I am successful is pre-mature. We have grown a ton over the past 7 years, but we have a long way to go. I think the appropriate word is to say that I am grateful for the opportunity. This is God’s business and I am simply the captain of his ship.

Q. (Bryan) Why should people care about you?

A. (JP) Because we are much more than a car dealer. We are a fun group of people that happen to sell cars. We are
community servants that happen to sell cars. We are your neighbors…and we happen to sell cars. We are focused much more on providing an excellent experience, than just moving cars, and I think this has served us very well.

Q. (Bryan) How do you plan to improve, evolve, survive?

A. (JP) Improvement, evolving and survival all run hand in hand. I was speaking to a good friend of mine
earlier today and I summed it up like this “I continue to have a healthy fear of failure.” I think this gives me an edge to keep progressing and growing … and never remaining complacent.

Q. (Bryan) How are you different from competitors?

A. (JP) One visit to any of our three dealerships will show you the difference – we are not an “old school” cheesy car dealership. We are a fun organization that thrives on making our customers raving fans. We understand that our guests are the reason we are in business and we are grateful to be providing them a helpful service.

Car Buying is a Dream with the OC Auto Team

It really is a dream and I should know.

Because I bought a car from OC Mazda.

First things first. I hate buying cars. I think it's because I always felt intimidated by the sales guys.

You know what I mean.

You walk in knowing what you want and what your price is and suddenly you're talking to someone who tells you what THEY think you need and what THEIR price is.

I dreaded walking into any dealership. I just didn't want to talk to any of them. It got to the point where I would send my wife in.

That didn't last too long.

So I created a little dream in my head, a fantasy really.

I dreamed of a place where I was listened to. Where people were nice and not threatening and they actually cared about getting my business and treating me like a person and not a sale.

I searched and searched all over Orange County.

I walked into a lot of dealerships.

And then I met Jim Feinstein. I actually met him online. OK that sounds weird but I was pricing an SUV and he sent me a quote. He and I went back and forth in some emails about a CX-9 for my wife. He listened. He came across as a very nice guy. I thought to myself, ok this is different.

And when it came time for a test drive I got on the lot and a strange thing happened. There was this casual pace in the store. People tried to be helpful. I met owner John Patterson and his Customer Care Queen Lynda Nelson. They went out of their way to listen to my needs and help me buy the exact car that I wanted.

It was very very different from other dealerships and it wasn't until I started writing this post that I realized what it was. The reason why I think OC Mazda and the OC Auto Team is special is because what they do is genuine. It is an outgrowth of who they are as people.

They are just really nice helpful folks who happen to sell cars. It's that simple.

And its that hard to do.

And it makes buying a car from them a dream come true.

You rarely discover the exception to the rule. And when you do you stick close to it. Because it's so hard to find. But when you do, it's a dream come true.

Mazda2: Fun and Fuel Efficient

There's a couple of reasons why the Mazda2 is on pace to have its best month since its launch - fuel economy and cost.

Not to mention it's just a fun car to drive.

Edmunds.com found that out of five vehicles compared (Mazda2, Ford Fiesta, Toyota Yaris, Honda Fit and Chevy Aveo) the Mazda2 city MPG rating is as good or better than all of them.

When comparing highway mileage, only the two door Yaris and the Fiesta beat the Mazda2 and then only by 1 MPG and 2 MPG respectively.

The Fiesta has an optional “high mileage” model (40 MPG rating) but it must be special ordered.

The Fiesta gets compared to the Mazda2 quite a bit.

When you make a true side by side comparison (no "special orders") the Mazda2 is less expensive and almost equivalent in fuel economy.

Besides, it's FUN vs. frumpy and we know who wins that battle...

Ever wonder how President's Day car selling got started? Pete DeMarco from the Boston Globe wrote a fun article about it, which we summarize here:

"The annual hoopla for Presidents' Day car sales is in full swing. But just when did the holiday become synonymous with automotive selling extravaganzas? And why?

The tradition, at least locally, started about a century ago, when entrepreneurial car dealer Alvan T. Fuller held a Washington's Birthday "open house" to promote sales of Cadillacs and Packards at his car emporium on Commonwealth Avenue. Sending out invitations to potential customers, he apparently posted signs reading "Washington's Birthday Holiday. Open. Come on in", according to archived (Boston) Globe stories.

The tactic worked wonders. By the 1920s, Fuller's once-struggling business "was recognized as the world's most successful auto dealership," according to his biography on the state's official website, mass.gov. Fuller, who later became governor, is also famous for sending Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti to the electric chair.

Interestingly, those inaugural holiday sales events were a lot like the ones we see today, as dealers competed with bands, cherry pie, free coffee, balloons and all sorts of gimmicks, according to John White, the Globe's auto writer emeritus. And their popularity apparently waned little over the decades. Fuller's 1958 Globe obituary hailed him as sole creator of an endearing, local tradition.

"Alvan T. Fuller, who parlayed a [Malden] bicycle repair shop into an automobile agency fortune, inaugurated the Washington's birthday display of new autos in an effort to boost sales after erecting 'Fuller's Folly,' his agency on Commonwealth Ave.," reads the May 1 obituary. "His promotion soon was copied by other dealers and today is a highlight of the holiday in Greater Boston."

Whether Fuller's idea was the template for Presidents' Day sales across the country is hard to say. Paul Taylor, chief economist for the National Automobile Dealers Association, founded in 1917, said he didn't know anything about Fuller.
Taylor also said that the impetus for Presidents' Day car sales has little to do with patriotism or "buying American."

"There are genuine economic reasons why the holiday period has become a strong car selling-season. It's not symbolism, in particular, even though you'll see George Washington's profile in a lot of ads," he said.

Presidents Day weekend is ideal for sales pushes, he said, because it falls at the right time of the year for car dealers to launch their new spring lines. Since many have the day off from work — and there are no parades, parties or football games to attend — customers have extra time to peruse car lots. And by mid-February, most of winter's nastiest weather is usually over, so people are more apt to drive around for deals.

"We think that any holiday weekend is a great weekend to go out and buy a new car. It's the luxury of time for the consumer that's important," Taylor said.

Taylor couldn't say when car sales across the country got pegged to Presidents Day, but he gathered it happened not long after the holiday was fixed to the third Monday of the month in 1971. (Before then, we celebrated Washington's birthday on Feb. 22.) Imports changed the market soon after that, so patriotic themes were probably fairly appealing to dealers of domestic-made cars.

The National Automobile Dealers Association, based in McLean, Virginia, wasn't behind the push, Taylor said. Local dealerships like Fuller's led the way.

Still, red, white and blue balloons, salesmen dressed in colonial garb and whatever other gimmicks dealers use to hype the day probably don't hurt, Taylor said."

You know, YOU JUST KNOW, if you take your car to the dealer, they are taking you to the cleaners.

But sometimes you get lucky.

Sometimes you find the exception to the rule.

This time we’re breaking down what they do to create the best marketing money can buy – word of mouth.

1. It’s the culture, stupid.

You see it as soon as you walk in the door, but more importantly you feel it. This isn’t an uncomfortable place to be. People talk to you like you’re another person. Not a mark. Not a “prospect”. Just someone who is looking for some help. And help is what you get. It’s very very simple. And very very hard to get right.

2. Understand what the customer wants.

Everybody talks a big game about this one but actually executing it is something else. And to experience it firsthand sort of takes your breath away. Wait, you care that I have a budget for repairs? You said you can fix that thing for half what my mechanic quoted me? Now you’re actually doing it? It’s done? That’s the bill? Being understood, actually being listened to, is all some customers want. Do that and you have them for life.

3. Hire great people.

Remember when the Angels won the World Series? Remember that batting lineup? No holes. Top to bottom it was first-class. Everybody had a role. Everyone was on the same page. Same thing here. It’s not like the guy who sold you the car was cool and the finance person was a jerk. Or the service guy is nice but the shuttle guy is scary. They all get it.

4. Do what you say you will do.

This is another one that is self-evident but hard to execute. Talk is cheap. It’s like the Seinfeld episode: anybody can TAKE a reservation, it’s the HOLDING that matters. They tell you in the service department your estimate is going to be x. Does it come back y? z? Nope, it’s freakin’ x.

5. Exceed expectations.

Taking your car in to get serviced? Yeah, it’ll be washed and cleaned inside and out too. Need to get back to the office…quickly? The shuttle will take you NOW. Need to be picked up? He will be there at 1 o’clock. And guess what. He’s there. Not at 1 o’clock. At 12:55.

6. Follow up, stay in touch, the right way.

Now it’s easier to do than ever. There are no excuses. But do most small businesses do it? Nope. And those that do, generally do it poorly. They act like an ex-boyfriend who keep interrupting your life. Come on buddy, it’s over. It was over when you started belching at every meal. So why are you sending me junk mail now? OC Mazda does the right thing the first time, then second time and by the third time I have granted them my permission to stay in touch and NOT just interrupt me.

7. Just remember The Golden Rule.

So I got my hands on the OC Mazda training manual. It’s huge. Thick. Heavy. Like 300 pages or something. Funny thing is, every page has one line on it and they all say the same thing: ”Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.”

Here’s what we do in our minivan:

Ditch the DVD player. Do we really need this?
Roll down all the car windows. Children are like puppies — the breeze invigorates them. I recommend doing this at the end of the day when you don’t mind sacrificing your carefully coiffed hairdo.
Music is a must. Our favorite used to be The Wiggles. I was heartbroken when Greg left the band. Now, I pretty much rule the playlist with Pink and the Red Hot Chili Peppers currently leading the pack. However, I’ve had to explain to my boys that some questionable lyrics should not be repeated at school.
Bring a friend for pickup. Your little (and even not so little) ones will get a big kick out of seeing their favorite stuffed animal buckled-up and waiting for them in the car after school.
Ask open-ended questions. Each day after school, I will ask my boys what was their favorite thing about school. Now, before I have a chance to even ask, they are always ready with their answers.
Let the kids kick off their school shoes. I keep extra flip-flops in our minivan just for this reason. This way they don’t have to put their school shoes back on when we arrive at our destination. Also, it’s nice not to have to look for shoes when you want to quickly jump in the car and go.
Play flight attendant. Pretend like your kids are the passengers and you’re the super nice (not like that JetBlue guy) flight attendant. Have snacks and kids magazines ready. Our favorites are Ranger Rick and Highlights. Have fun hamming it up with announcements.
Give yourself plenty of time to get where you’re going. It’s better to arrive early and have to wait, than stressing out everyone by having to rush.
Read the signs. Have your early readers tell you what the traffic signs say. Who doesn’t remember reading the STOP sign when they were little?
Enjoy the journey and talk about what you see. There is a whole world out those car windows and learning opportunities at every corner.

The 2’s price is nice, starting at $14,730, and our test example rang in at $16,985. As for the competition, the Ford Fiesta hatchback starts at $15,795, the cheapest Honda Fit is $15,650, and the Nissan Versa five-door can be had for as low as $14,270. But add options to those models to equip them comparably to the 2, and their prices zoom past this Mazda’s; we stand behind our conviction that it represents a good value. Besides, the 2’s lively handling makes it among the most rewarding to drive of the bunch, even though it loses in cargo versatility to the Rube Goldbergian Fit. If you want to keep the price down, though, the Mazda 2 Sport should drive exactly the same as this Touring, and it still has features like A/C, power windows and locks, and keyless entry as standard. In either guise, the 2 provides clear proof of that secret we mentioned up top: Small, cheap cars can deliver ample fun during everyday driving, and they don’t come much more enjoyable than the Mazda 2.

2011 Mazda 2 - First Drive Review

Mazda’s fun new subcompact is simple and affordable.

With lofty government-mandated fuel-economy standards coming down on one hand and a shaky economy spurring consumer interest on the other, carmakers are serving up more subcompact cars to U.S. consumers than ever. Among the most hotly anticipated (at least among Car and Driver staffers) is the 2011 Mazda 2, Mazda’s first America-bound B-segment vehicle since the 323 and arguably the best such car Mazda has ever built.

Although Mazda is calling the 2011 model the “third generation” of the 2, it’s more or less a refresh of the second-gen car sold around the globe since 2008. Aside from redesigned front and rear fascias and sundry new interior bits, it’s essentially the same car as before, one that shares its architecture with Ford’s slick new Fiesta—which, incidentally, also arrives stateside for 2011.

Of the two platformmates, the 2 is the simpler machine: lighter, less powerful, and available only as a five-door hatchback in Sport and Touring trim levels. Its Eurocentric cabin assigns ergonomic priority to front-seat occupants while giving rear-seaters (and cargo) the somewhat shorter end of the stick. The interior design is pleasing, but the features list is surprisingly short. Unavailable, for example, even on Touring models, are a telescoping steering wheel, a sunroof, integrated navigation (a portable Garmin system will be available from dealers), a USB port, and a hands-free Bluetooth system. The only option beyond dealer accessories is special paint.

But the 2 is a hoot to drive. The 1.5-liter four-cylinder’s 100 hp and 98 lb-ft of torque won’t exactly burn your hair off, but this engine revs freely and sounds good as it springs the 2’s feathery 2300-pound curb weight (2350 with the automatic) into motion. Better yet, the electric power steering and the chassis offer surprising feel and quick, linear responses to driver inputs. Ditto the front-disc, rear-drum brakes. Meanwhile, fuel economy is good if not worldbeating, at 29 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway for the five-speed manual and 27/33 for the four-speed automatic.

The 2 hits dealerships this August, priced from $14,730 for the manual-equipped Sport to $16,985 for an automatic Touring model. It offers a lot of driving goodness for the money. But unlike the similarly priced Fiesta, the 2 has no available sedan body style, 20 fewer hp, and fuel economy that’s 3 to 5 mpg lower on the highway. If any of those things are important to you, the choice is clear: Go for the Ford. If, however, you want to keep your B-segment car at a B-segment price—the Fiesta can be optioned to more than 22 grand—go for the more-performance-oriented 2.

It used to be that a car was toast at 100,000 miles. Worthless.

"Used up," agrees Phil Reed, a senior consumer-advice editor at Edmunds.com.

Today, that's a costly misperception. "For a lot of buyers, their frame of reference is out of date," Reed says. "Now you can easily go 200,000 miles with regular maintenance."

Heck, why not aim for 250,000? Or more? That dissonance between what many people believe and how well most late-model cars are built has produced a tantalizing buying opportunity: the $5,000 used car that you can drive virtually indefinitely.
It won't have that new-car smell, your retinas won't be scorched by its shine, and the neighbors won't be jealous. But the compensating virtues are overwhelming.

"A conservatively driven and well-maintained $5,000 car should last 10 years," says Steven Lang, who owns two used-car lots and half an auto auction, and writes frequently on used cars at The Truth About Cars. "Cars are engineered today so that you'll get tired of them long before they tire out on you."

You could save a bundle, learn a lot about cars and maybe even improve your social standing.

For the second-generation restyling of the Mazda3, the “Zoom-Zoom” automaker personified on its front end what many of its owners already had on their faces: a big ol’ grin.

On both counts, it’s easy to understand the elation, both real and implied: The Mazda3 is among the best proof that a car can be fun and affordable, efficient and energetic.

After testing the 2010 sedan version of the car upon its initial launch last year, I found all these traits to be true, ones that would lead Car and Driver to put the car on its coveted 10 Best list and, with a starting price of just over $15,000 for the four-door version, for Consumer Reports to give it a “Recommended” rating.

After driving the hatchback version of the car around Orange County for a week, my appreciation for the little Mazda3 grew even more.

Review: 2010 Mazda CX-7 i Sport does a lot with less

When Mazda’s CX-7 arrived about three years ago, it became one of several crossovers whose DNA heavily reflected a car rather than a traditional sport utility vehicle. That, of course, isn’t much of a surprise coming from Mazda, known for sporty cars like the MX-5 Miata and RX-8, which give credence to its “zoom-zoom” motto.

The CX-7 became a quick hit, but because it was only available with a turbo-charged engine, the vehicle came with a price higher than many of its peers, a tag that could easily reach over $30,000 with options like all-wheel-drive and a navigation system.

For 2010, though, Mazda says it has recognized a consumer need for a lower-priced version of the CX-7. To get the price down, the crossover is now being offered in two base forms with Mazda’s 2.5-liter naturally aspirated (non-turbo) four-cylinder engine that is also found in the Mazda6 and Mazda3.

With the introduction of these models, the CX-7 now has a wallet-friendly starting tag of $22,450, about $4,000 less than the beginning price of models with the turbocharged, 244-horsepower 2.3-liter four, which remains available in two other versions of the CX-7.

I recently spent a week behind the wheel of a 2010 CX-7 i Sport with the newly available base engine, wandering all over Orange County to see if this lower-priced CX-7 could pull its proverbial and literal weight.

n addition to shaving thousands of dollars off the cost of the more powerful versions of the CX-7, those with the base engine – offering 161 horsepower, 161 lb.-ft of torque – save on fuel, too. My front-wheel-drive tester was rated at 20 city/28 highway, vs. 18/25 for a front-drive turbo version. In real-world driving, I got between 24 and 25 mpg drinking regular unleaded (premium is required for the turbo).

To my eye, the CX-7 is a svelte, good looking vehicle whose angles mimic a sports car. The vehicle has a minimum of 8.1 inches of ground clearance, meaning that it might be able to tackle some ruttier paths that would snag its competitors, but that adversely affected the speed at which you can take corners. Don’t try to mimic a Miata in this thing; it is, after all SUV-like tall and must be treated as such.

Drive-wise, it was difficult to find much not to like about this CX-7 except its relatively tame engine. The ride was compliant and comfortable, with good visibility. Inside, all controls were within easy reach. If, like me, your regular ride is a Mazda, you’ll feel right at home behind the wheel.

From Steve Goodman, a new customer and a great, new friend!

Steve Goodman and his son, Danny, came by the Tustin Mazda store to look at a car for Danny. They took home a Mazda 3 and seemed very happy with their choice.

That could be the end of the story, however, Steve had a few things to say about the experience. Steve called in a few days ago and spoke with our Customer Care rep. He wanted to make sure his comments were shared on-line and who are we to object?!

Steve wound up meeting John Patterson on the day he and Danny came in. Steve was struck with how much time John spent with them, even though JP mentioned a meeting he had to leave for. He talked to Danny about school and shared with Steve his thoughts on business. Steve was impressed with how comfortable everyone was at the dealership and the sense of teamwork he observed. Steve indicated that it was the best car buying experience he has ever had and he was so pleased his son was able to observe it. He has always expressed to Danny to only do business with ethical, honest companies. He told Danny, "If you do, you'll always be pleased with the product". That night, Danny remarked to his dad that he now understands what Steve meant about doing business with someone you trust. Steve tells us Danny will now have to buy all his cars from John, as he can't guarantee that Danny will continue to have such a positive car buying experience elsewhere. (Steve, we are totally OK with that...!)

Over the last couple years, Mazda has given its sporty sedan a new look and greater interior space, turning it into a full-fledged family car. Yet it retains the zip and handling that have defined it since it was launched in 2002. Before the 2009 model year, it might have seemed as though Dad was trying to pull one over on Mom if he proposed this sporty number as the family vehicle. But now he can easily make the case for the "6." For one thing, the model’s updated interior offers more elbow room and richer interior appointments. But it gets most of its personality from its powertrains: a perky 170 hp, 2.5-liter four-cylinder for the more economy-minded driver, and a 272 hp 3.7-liter V6 for the truly power-hungry. The Mazda6 also may fit into the family budget. 2009 has not been without it's challenges, but it's with the dedicated men and women of OC Mazda who meet those challenges head on and then ask for more. "Bring it on" seems to be the new motto and the one that will see us through to new challenges and a few successes that we are confident 2010 will bring.

It was announced at Saturday's party, that not only did we raise $12,000.00 for charity,($4,000 more than last year) just at our party alone, but that we have tipped the scales at over $500,000.00 donated to local causes since we started in 2004! John Patterson wins Top Leader Award in Orange County!

John Patterson owns the Mazda dealership at 16800 Beach Blvd. in Huntington Beach. He is receiving the Orange Ccounty Register's "Top Leader" award for his work there.

Why he won the award: Patterson has done some old-fashioned business management: his two dealerships win awards for customer service, he gives back to the community and he treats his employees with a great big Christmas Party.

Just five years old, OC Mazda has already won several awards from Mazda Corp., which he said "motivates us to stay at the top of our game." A recent grand-reopening at the Huntington Beach location repositioned that dealership as the only "Mazda Retail Revolution" showroom in Orange County. But it had a decidedly old-fashioned party, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by Mazda representatives and local politicians.

Patterson sets aside $50 from every vehicle sold to be donated to community charities, such as the American Cancer Society Relay for Life, Pancreatic Cancer Research and the Mariners Elementary School Foundation. A member of the Mariners Church in Irvine, Patterson also offers "give cards" instead of gift cards, that offer support to those in need. For instance, the company helped the firefighters and those affected in last year's wildfires.

"Our philosophy is very simple: take care of the community and the community will take care of our business," he said.

The company's annual Christmas Party is "a true morale builder," Patterson said, and he treats his employees to a Prom Night-like party, an overnight stay at a nice hotel, and a babysitter to watch employees' children.

"Many dealers have eliminated this expense as unnecessary, but I could not disagree more," he said.

Last year's party was held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Irvine and the company threw a murder-mystery dinner. Gifts ranging from $25 to $2,000 each were given out and presents were also given to the kids.

Downturn strategy: Adopting a theme from a Patterson friend, the company went to a "Nice, but not needed" philosophy. Managers ran down all costs in an effort to "find money," Patterson said. Managers found they were wasting $10,000 a month in advertising costs and even went through electric bills, discovering that thermostats were set too high at night. The oil used for servicing cars was found, after some research, at a lower cost. Vendors were asked for discounts, which were sometimes given.

"We put a pencil to every expense that we have," Patterson said.

Although the company still had to lay off six employees from its staff of 104, Patterson said the savings helped save a few jobs and the company didn't have to pass on any costs to its customers.

Irvine-based Mazda today gave media a first glimpse of the U.S.-bound Mazda 2. The car will be the smallest offered by Mazda North American Operations, falling below the Mazda 3 in the automaker’s lineup.

This high-mileage subcompact has earned Car of the Year awards in more than 20 countries overseas since its launch in 2007. The L.A. Auto Show marks the U.S. debut of this highly anticipated vehicle. With an overall length of 155.51 inches, this B-segment car is about about 5 inches longer than a Toyota Yaris and more than 20 inches shorter than its bigger brother, the Mazda 3. Here are some specs on this new little five-passenger hatchback:

Special Tax Break Available for New Car Purchases This Year

IR-2009-30, March 30, 2009

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service announced today that taxpayers who buy a new passenger vehicle this year may be entitled to deduct state and local sales and excise taxes paid on the purchase on their 2009 tax returns next year.

“For those thinking about buying a new car this year, this deduction may give them a little more drive to make their purchase this year,” said IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman. “This deduction enables taxpayers to buy now and get cash back later on their tax returns.”

The deduction is limited to the state and local sales and excise taxes paid on up to $49,500 of the purchase price of a qualified new car, light truck, motor home or motorcycle.

The amount of the deduction is phased out for taxpayers whose modified adjusted gross income is between $125,000 and $135,000 for individual filers and between $250,000 and $260,000 for joint filers.

IRS also alerted taxpayers that the vehicle must be purchased after Feb. 16, 2009, and before Jan. 1, 2010, to qualify for the deduction.

The special deduction is available regardless of whether a taxpayer itemizes deductions on their return. The IRS reminded taxpayers the deduction may not be taken on 2008 tax returns.
