What do you like about working in Retail? That's the first question I ask a potential new hire.

Retail? Car Dealer? Yes. The automotive business is retail, no different than furniture buying, tool buying, or sassy high-heel buying. So, my first question to a potential new hire is, "what do you like about working in Retail?" If somewhere, almost immediately in that answer is "I like working with people", that nervous candidate gets to stay for the entire interview. However, if I don't hear that answer, the candidate is cooked, done, dinner is over and the main course just got missed.

At OC Mazda, liking to work with people, isn't our job, it's our calling. It's the boss's passion and we're coached on it every day. It starts with him, he shows us how by enjoying the heck out of every customer he meets.

Why is it so important? It isn't. It's rewarding. In this point-and-click society, it's immediately gratifying. No one has to tell you you've done a great job, and you don't have to wait for praise from management.
You can see it in your customer's face.
You can feel it in their handshake.
You can even read about it when they publicly thank you.

We sell a solid product, we work for a fantastic company, and we become friends with the best customers we've ever had the privilege to meet.

We'd like you to meet one of them. Steve Averill, of OCBizBlog http://ocbizblog.com/

Thank you, Steve. And thank you to all our customers. You give us more zoom-zoom than even that new Mazda your driving is giving you!
