Our signature way to end a year...the OC Mazda Employee Christmas Party

The OC Mazda employees really know how to have a great end-of-the-year bash!
With tremendous reason to celebrate; OC Mazda is the number one Mazda Dealer in the Western Region of the United States, OC Mazda, for the second year in a row, was awarded as a Top Work Place, our leader, John Patterson, awarded as a Top Leader in Orange County, Mazda's President's Cup award presented to us, and mostly, because it's fun to have fun.

2009 has not been without it's challenges, but it's with the dedicated men and women of OC Mazda who meet those challenges head on and then ask for more. "Bring it on" seems to be the new motto and the one that will see us through to new challenges and a few successes that we are confident 2010 will bring.

It was announced at Saturday's party, that not only did we raise $12,000.00 for charity,($4,000 more than last year) just at our party alone, but that we have tipped the scales at over $500,000.00 donated to local causes since we started in 2004! Our goal is one million dollars by 2014 and we're well on our way.

The OC Mazda kids had a great time at the Crowne Plaza Irvine, too! The Crowne Plaza is our favorite place to enjoy our time together and we've already booked next year's holiday party with them!

So to our readers,
We wish you and yours a very Merry Christmas. May the beauty of the season be in your hearts all year long. May the joy of family be realized everyday and may good health and happiness be yours to hold and to share.
We encourage you to find one small way to help someone who is in need. It's the very essence of the season.
Happy Holidays!

John Patterson wins Top Leader Award in Orange County!

Company: OC Mazda – with dealerships in Huntington Beach and Tustin.

Special Award: John Patterson, OC Mazda president, as top leader for small companies.

John Patterson owns the Mazda dealership at 16800 Beach Blvd. in Huntington Beach. He is receiving the Orange Ccounty Register's "Top Leader" award for his work there.

Why he won the award: Patterson has done some old-fashioned business management: his two dealerships win awards for customer service, he gives back to the community and he treats his employees with a great big Christmas Party.

Just five years old, OC Mazda has already won several awards from Mazda Corp., which he said "motivates us to stay at the top of our game." A recent grand-reopening at the Huntington Beach location repositioned that dealership as the only "Mazda Retail Revolution" showroom in Orange County. But it had a decidedly old-fashioned party, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by Mazda representatives and local politicians.

Patterson sets aside $50 from every vehicle sold to be donated to community charities, such as the American Cancer Society Relay for Life, Pancreatic Cancer Research and the Mariners Elementary School Foundation. A member of the Mariners Church in Irvine, Patterson also offers "give cards" instead of gift cards, that offer support to those in need. For instance, the company helped the firefighters and those affected in last year's wildfires.

"Our philosophy is very simple: take care of the community and the community will take care of our business," he said.

The company's annual Christmas Party is "a true morale builder," Patterson said, and he treats his employees to a Prom Night-like party, an overnight stay at a nice hotel, and a babysitter to watch employees' children.

"Many dealers have eliminated this expense as unnecessary, but I could not disagree more," he said.

Last year's party was held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Irvine and the company threw a murder-mystery dinner. Gifts ranging from $25 to $2,000 each were given out and presents were also given to the kids.

Downturn strategy: Adopting a theme from a Patterson friend, the company went to a "Nice, but not needed" philosophy. Managers ran down all costs in an effort to "find money," Patterson said. Managers found they were wasting $10,000 a month in advertising costs and even went through electric bills, discovering that thermostats were set too high at night. The oil used for servicing cars was found, after some research, at a lower cost. Vendors were asked for discounts, which were sometimes given.

"We put a pencil to every expense that we have," Patterson said.

Although the company still had to lay off six employees from its staff of 104, Patterson said the savings helped save a few jobs and the company didn't have to pass on any costs to its customers.

With an overall length of 155.51 inches, this B-segment car is about about 5 inches longer than a Toyota Yaris and more than 20 inches shorter than its bigger brother, the Mazda 3. Mazda 3 Receives ALG Award for Highest Residual Value

IRVINE, Calif. (December 2, 2009) – The 2010 MAZDA3 was today named the Best Mid-Compact Car for value retention by ALG. Additionally, the MAZDA6 sport sedan and the Mazda CX-9 crossover SUV ranked third place in their respective classes. And, in its highest finishing position ever, the Mazda brand was ranked third in predicted resale value, up from sixth position in 2009.

ALG honors vehicles in 19 individual industry segments that they predict will retain the highest percentage of the purchase price after a three-year period. This all-important value retention recognition provides consumers with peace of mind when choosing a new vehicle.
“As one of every three Mazdas sold around the world is a MAZDA3, this award speaks not just to the quality of an individual vehicle, but to the overall strength of the Mazda brand,” said Jim O’Sullivan, President and CEO, Mazda North American Operations. “We are pleased to be recognized by ALG for having vehicles that are not only fun to drive, but have some of the highest resale values.”

All-new for 2010, the MAZDA3 boasts a level of refinement, sophistication and fun-to-drive dynamics that are not found in other compact vehicles. MAZDA3 is available in either four-door sedan or five-door hatchback body styles, and with a choice of two engines and two transmissions, and is the company’s best-selling vehicle, with over two-million sold worldwide since 2003.

ALG determines the award winners after carefully studying the competition in each segment, historical vehicle performance and industry trends. Vehicle quality, production levels relative to demand and pricing strategies are among the key factors that affect ALG’s residual value forecasts.

“We believe Residual Value remains the best metric for evaluating the overall strength of an automotive brand, and we congratulate Mazda for the proven success of its MAZDA3,” said James Clark, General Manager of ALG. “The ALG Residual Value Awards are recognized throughout the industry and by consumers as the mark of a healthy brand; winning this award is a testament to an exceptionally strong product and all of us at ALG are pleased to recognize that accomplishment.”

Based in Santa Barbara, California, ALG is a leading provider of data and consulting services to the automotive industry. ALG publishes the “Automotive Lease Guide” – the standard for Residual Value projections in North America, and has been forecasting automotive residual values for over 40 years in both the U.S. and Canadian markets. ALG is a company of DealerTrack Holdings, Inc. (Nasdaq: TRAK).

Celebrating its 40th Anniversary in the United States in 2010, Mazda North American Operations is headquartered in Irvine, Calif. and oversees the sales, marketing, parts and customer service support of Mazda vehicles in the United States, Canada and Mexico through nearly 900 dealers. Operations in Canada are managed by Mazda Canada, Inc., located in Ontario; and in Mexico by Mazda Motor de Mexico in Mexico City.

BIG NEWS! GREAT TAX BREAK! DON'T MISS IT!

Special Tax Break Available for New Car Purchases This Year

IR-2009-30, March 30, 2009

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service announced today that taxpayers who buy a new passenger vehicle this year may be entitled to deduct state and local sales and excise taxes paid on the purchase on their 2009 tax returns next year.

“For those thinking about buying a new car this year, this deduction may give them a little more drive to make their purchase this year,” said IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman. “This deduction enables taxpayers to buy now and get cash back later on their tax returns.”

The deduction is limited to the state and local sales and excise taxes paid on up to $49,500 of the purchase price of a qualified new car, light truck, motor home or motorcycle.

The amount of the deduction is phased out for taxpayers whose modified adjusted gross income is between $125,000 and $135,000 for individual filers and between $250,000 and $260,000 for joint filers.

IRS also alerted taxpayers that the vehicle must be purchased after Feb. 16, 2009, and before Jan. 1, 2010, to qualify for the deduction.

The special deduction is available regardless of whether a taxpayer itemizes deductions on their return. The IRS reminded taxpayers the deduction may not be taken on 2008 tax returns.

What do you like about working in Retail? That's the first question I ask a potential new hire.

Retail? Car Dealer? Yes. The automotive business is retail, no different than furniture buying, tool buying, or sassy high-heel buying. So, my first question to a potential new hire is, "what do you like about working in Retail?" If somewhere, almost immediately in that answer is "I like working with people", that nervous candidate gets to stay for the entire interview. However, if I don't hear that answer, the candidate is cooked, done, dinner is over and the main course just got missed.

At OC Mazda, liking to work with people, isn't our job, it's our calling. It's the boss's passion and we're coached on it every day. It starts with him, he shows us how by enjoying the heck out of every customer he meets.

Why is it so important? It isn't. It's rewarding. In this point-and-click society, it's immediately gratifying. No one has to tell you you've done a great job, and you don't have to wait for praise from management.
You can see it in your customer's face.
You can feel it in their handshake.
You can even read about it when they publicly thank you.

We sell a solid product, we work for a fantastic company, and we become friends with the best customers we've ever had the privilege to meet.

We'd like you to meet one of them. Steve Averill, of OCBizBlog http://ocbizblog.com/

Thank you, Steve. And thank you to all our customers. You give us more zoom-zoom than even that new Mazda your driving is giving you!

Mazda giving green twist to rotary engine

Hydrogen power could revive old technology from Japanese maker
By Paul A. Eisenstein
msnbc.com contributor
updated 7:39 a.m. PT, Thurs., Sept . 3, 2009

The squeeze is on. Automakers around the world are coming under increasing pressure to improve fuel economy and reduce emissions, even though consumers seem unwilling to sacrifice performance or pay a higher price for the technology needed to go green.

In this highly competitive horse race, there is no “silver bullet,” no single environmentally friendly solution, so manufacturers are turning to an array of alternatives that could eventually supplement, perhaps even replace, the time-tested internal combustion engine.

Mazda, the small Japanese affiliate of Ford Motor Co., is betting it has a unique weapon in its own powertrain arsenal, the Wankel, or rotary engine. Small, simple and lightweight, it was once seen as a promising substitute for the piston engine, but never lived up to its initial expectations.

But now Mazda believes the Wankel could move from a niche to mainstream source of power, and one that could be brought to market sooner and at a significantly lower cost than the fuel cell vehicles and battery cars on which other manufacturers are showering their attention —and billions in research dollars.

At a recent preview of Mazda’s 2010 product line, the maker unveiled two rotary-powered prototypes running on hydrogen, rather than gasoline. Many experts believe hydrogen could become the fuel of the future.

Most manufacturers have focused their attention on hydrogen-powered fuel cells, which feed the lightweight gas into a device called a stack, where it combines with oxygen to produce a steady flow of electric current. The resulting current is then used to power an electric motor. It’s a sophisticated and elegant technology that’s still better suited to the space program —where it was first used on the Apollo moon mission — and likely years away from commercial viability.

Mazda’s approach is to feed hydrogen, rather than gasoline, into its rotary engine, explains Akihiro Kashiwagi, head of the Hydrogen RE (short for Rotary Engine) project. It’s not quite as efficient as a fuel cell, but the technology is readily available and reasonably affordable. As with the fuel cell, the only byproduct is a misty stream of water vapor spewing from the tailpipe of a modified RX-8 the automaker allowed me to drive around the grounds of the Laguna Seca Raceway near Monterey, Calif.

The RX-8, a four-seat sports car, fires up with the touch of a button, the engine developing a curious buzz that one bystander suggests sounds a bit like “a vacuum cleaner that’s just swallowed something big.” But as it slips into gear, the car lurches forward and picks up speed.

Not a lot, however, for Mazda has had to detune the engine a bit to let it operate in dual-fuel mode. A critical advantage of using the rotary engine is that once this RX-8 has run out of hyrdrogen, it can switch to a second tank using readily available gasoline and just keep on going. The various hyrdogen-powered fuel cell vehicles being tested in Southern California as part of an elaborate experiment by other automakers and government authorities can never go more than 50 to 100 miles away from their refueling stations — unless the driver wants to be towed home.

Mazda recently introduced a second, more complex version of the Hydrogen RE system, using the Japanese version of its MX5 microvan.

This vehicle has been set up as a "series" hybrid. Unlike a Toyota Prius, whose wheels can be powered by its gasoline engine, electric motor or both, the Hydrogen RE Primacy van is powered solely by electricity. The hydrogen rotary functions only as a generator, charging up the vehicle’s battery or sending power directly to the electric motor turning its wheels.

The system is more efficient than that found in the Hydrogen RE RX-8, meaning better fuel economy and a range of about 200 miles.

At low speeds, the battery alone is used. And, says Kashiwagi, “In the future, this system could easily be converted to a plug-in hybrid,” like the planned Chevy Volt, by increasing the size of the lithium-ion battery. That would allow the vehicle to travel for 20, 30, 40 miles or more solely on electric power.

As with the Hydrogen RE RX-8, there’s a fair amount of buzzing from the Premacy. There’s also the drawback of giving up the third row of seats to make room for a big tank of hydrogen. But there’s still enough space for five passengers.

Like other hydrogen vehicles, the Mazda Hydrogen RE technology still has a bit of work to be done, but the company insists it could be ready for the retail world far sooner than fuel cells – and overcome some of the limitations of battery power, notably the lack of range.

The challenge is probably not one of using hydrogen, says Kashiwagi, but simply getting the fuel. There’s no nationwide production or distribution method and setting up one would likely be a slow and costly challenge. Nonetheless, hydrogen does have its advantages and plenty of proponents. And if Mazda is right, its technology could provide a clean alternative powertrain sooner than many other alternatives still struggling to make it to market.

Thanks Warren...we think the 2010 Mazda CX7 rocks it out of the driveway, too!

Here is a part of the article Warren Brown recently wrote for The Washington Post. For the entire article, please find the link below.

These Four Cylinders Have Got What You Need
2010 Mazda CX-7 Sport

The Mazda CX-7's four-cylinder engine runs on regular unleaded gasoline unassisted by turbocharging -- using exhaust gases to power an impeller to pull more fresh air into an engine and, thus, boost power. But it's no slouch.

Pushing the CX-7's gas pedal yields substantially more speed than anxiety. There's no waiting for the engine to catch up with the demands of your right foot. Response is immediate, precise. That builds confidence, which provides peace of mind behind the wheel, especially on a long drive.

It's over this Monday...it's official, Cash for Clunkers is done as of Monday 8/24...hurry in to either store, 80% of our line-up qualifies!

Cash for Clunkers Ending

With money running out, $3 billion Cash for Clunkers program will end on Monday. The tally so far: 457,000 cars and $1.9 billion in rebates.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) --

The $3 billion Cash for Clunkers program will shut down on Monday, the government said Thursday.

Dealers must submit any pending Clunker deals, including any necessary paperwork, by 8 p.m. ET Monday.

"It's been a thrill to be part of the best economic news story in America," said Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. "Now we are working toward an orderly wind down of this very popular program."

Officials decided to wind down the program, which Congress passed to spur flagging auto sales, after determining that it would soon run out of money.

As of Thursday, the program has recorded more than 457,000 dealer transactions worth $1.9 billion in rebates.

The stylish, make you sit up and notice, new 2010 Mazda 6. Here at OC Mazda!

It's What's on the Inside that Counts

Beauty doesn't stop at the door. The 2010 Mazda 6 has an all new interior design that's clean and elegantly simple, enhanced by quality materials, although the flimsy inside rearview mirror is out of step on this score. We enjoy the look of the major gauges, with their pulsing blue halos, and we were pleasantly surprised that the bolstering on the front seats was slightly aggressive, differing from the sporty message conveyed by the exterior.

On the other hand, the Mazda has a nifty touch we haven't seen anywhere else in this class: a three-position switch for adjusting headlight level ideal for occasions when you've filled the trunk with heavy stuff such as cement bags or your mother-in-law.

Engine Power
The Mazda's standard transmission is a six-speed manual which is a satisfying piece of equipment with short throws and positive engagements. The Mazda's four-cylinder is up from 2.3 liters and 156 horsepower to 2.5 liters and 170 horses168 in PZEV (Partial Zero-Emission Vehicle) California editions such as our test car. Although the Mazda's power plant comes up seven horses short of the Fusion's, it registered identical times in the benchmark sprints: 0 to 60 in 8.0 seconds, the quarter-mile in 16.1 at 88 mph.

Fuel-economy estimates stand at 20 mpg city/29 highway and 23 combined for four-cylinder models with the manual transmission, while the five-speed auto improves the four's numbers to 21 mpg city/30 highway and 24 combined. These are class-competitive numbers. However, if you opt for the V6, estimates drop to 17 mpg city/25 highway and 20 combined, which is about as bad as it gets in this segment.

Testers found that the all new 6 showed that the handling and aggressiveness hasn't been diminished by the increase in size over the previous model. There are subtle distinctions over its predecessor, and they are all good. Brake pedal feel was impressive in comparison to its competitors. The Mazda turned in readily, with responsive handling.

Auto 123.com likes the SPEED3...who can blame them!

Mosport, Ontario – The torrential rain that seemingly flushes our summer down the drain did not spare the Mosport International Raceway, near Toronto. It also affected my first contact with the all-new 2010 Mazdaspeed3, forcing me to use my entire bag of tricks and my good old racing reflexes in order to be able to push this sporty compact to the limit.
As I soon found out, though, the challenge was much easier than anticipated. This new generation has become a little less extreme, more flexible and way more balanced. Plus, with Mazda sticking to a front-wheel drive configuration instead of all-wheel drive, the Mazdaspeed3 doesn’t have to face direct competition from the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution and Subaru Impreza WRX, meaning it stands alone atop its class.

For sure, it retained one of its biggest strengths; as a true member of the Mazda family, the 2010 Mazdaspeed3 is still among the best-handling Japanese cars on the road.

It's here.....and better than ever! The 2010 Mazda Speed3....oh yeah, test drives were never this much fun. Get in, sit down and HANG ON!!

They like it!
"As with the standard Mazda3, Mazda's "Nagare" design language is apparent. The 2010 version receives a new lower airdam and hood scoop to differentiate it. The larger scoop improves intercooler airflow and frees enough real estate for a new intake duct; both upgrades, Mazda says, improve efficiency. Side skirts and larger exhaust tips complete the visual upgrades."

"Cash for Clunkers" What is the Car Allowance Rebate System?

At OC Mazda, both Tustin Mazda and Huntington Beach, we are your Cash 4 Clunkers Experts! For more information we encourage you to go to the link at the end of this article. For that 10 year old clunker that's getting 13 or 14 MPG, you'll be able to get a credit of either $3500.00 or $4500.00, depending on what you buy, towards the purchase of a brand new, fuel efficient Mazda! Combine it with the great Mazda Factory Incentives and your new Mazda will be thousands of dollars off the sticker price. If you've been thinking about getting a new car, now, is the ABSOLUTE BEST TIME-EVER! This government assisted program will not last very long, so take advantage of this right now!

President Obama signed into law a program the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is calling the Car Allowance Rebate System (CARS). This is a federal program that helps you purchase a new, more fuel efficient vehicle when you trade in a less fuel efficient vehicle.

What is the Car Allowance Rebate System?
The Car Allowance Rebate System is a new program from the government that will help you pay for a new, more fuel efficient car or truck from a participating dealer when you trade in a less fuel efficient car or truck.

Fact Sheet: Car Allowance Rebate System (“CARS”)
The “Car Allowance Rebate System” – also known as Cash for Clunkers – was signed into law on June 24, 2009.

The CARS program allows a consumer to trade in
an older, fuel-inefficient vehicle and receive a government incentive of either $3,500 or $4,500
to help pay for a new, more fuel-efficient car or truck.

The customer does not need a paper voucher and is not required to sign up or enroll in the program. Participating new car dealers will apply a credit, reducing the price
paid at the time of purchase for an eligible new vehicle. The dealer will then obtain reimbursement from the government. The program begins when the final
regulations are issued by the U.S. Department of Transportation in mid- to late-July and runs through October 31, 2009 or until the funding is depleted, whichever
occurs earlier. Congress has provided $1 billion for the program, a sufficient amount for approximately 250,000 vehicles.

OC Register reviews our 2010 Mazda 3

New Mazda3 Gives Plenty Of Grins
Matt Degen Register Writer

As a car reviewer, I'm supposed to find the shortcomings in the vehicles I drive and relay all the good stuff regarding engine advances, improved fuel economy and the like.
When thinking about my past week behind the wheel of the newly redesigned Mazda3, I've been at a loss to find much – if anything – negative about this compact.
For 2010, Mazda has stretched the car by about 3 inches, upgraded the interior, improved fuel economy and made available a bigger engine.
My tester was the i Touring version with an MSRP of $18,350, which falls in the middle of the car's entry-level i SV ($15,795) and top-of-the-line s Grand Touring edition ($22,250).
The Mazda 3 could still be considered a budget car, but it in no way feels cheap. The cloth interior is comfortable for up to five, the trunk can easily swallow a few suitcases, and the dashboard controls feel like they were custom-made for your hands.
Then there's the 3's peppy engines and sporty tuning. Mazda touts that all its cars have the “soul of a sports car,” and that is abundantly true with the 3.
While this is no tarmac burner, the Mazda3, even with its base 2.0-liter, 148-horsepower in-line four-cylinder engine, always felt competent. Connected to a five-speed automatic transmission with optional manual-shift, the power plant happily revved to its 6,500 rpm limit, making for 0-60 times of about eight seconds and easy passing at freeway speeds.
For those who care more for luxury, upscale items such as heated seats, leather upholstery, navigation system, rain-sensing wipers and xenon headlamps are available.
Like the 2.5-liter engine, the 2.0 for this new model year has been made more fuel-efficient by calibrating the engine and decreasing drag. The result is an MPG rating of 24/33.
So what's not to like about the Mazda3? I'm still searching. Perhaps the biggest issue buyers will have is with the new front grille, which Mazda said is “purposely polarizing” with its smiling fascia.
I'm still undecided on that part. But the rest of the Mazda3 has left me with nothing but grins.

News from Washington..."Cash for Clunkers" Bill

$1-billion clunkers bill awaits president's OK

WASHINGTON -- Buyers, start your engines.

The U.S. Senate on Thursday sent a $1-billion cash-for-clunkers measure to President Barack Obama for his signature -- affixed to an unrelated, $106-billion war spending bill. Once he signs, as expected, the government will have a month to come up with how it's going to run the program, which should put $3,500 to $4,500 in the pockets of about 250,000 people trading older gas guzzlers in for new, more environmentally friendly vehicles.
The program won't last beyond Nov. 1 under the available funding -- which could run dry long before that.
• Q&A: Understanding cash-for-clunkers voucher plan
"I think we'll see the funds going pretty quickly," said Sen. Debbie Stabenow, a Michigan Democrat who has fought for months to get a program under way to spur car sales and help automakers and dealers through the current downturn.
Republican critics complained that the cash-for-clunkers measure was an extravagance and represented more government aid for Detroit's ailing carmakers. Some Democrats, meanwhile, complained the program didn't go far enough to ensure people bought the most fuel-efficient vehicles available.
What's certain is that the automakers and dealers need the help. May's sales numbers were the best of the year for the U.S. auto industry -- with more than 923,000 cars, trucks and SUVs sold -- but that was off more than 30% from May 2008.
The clunkers program covers imports as well as vehicles made by Detroit's automakers.

We will keep you posted with all the latest information regarding this program! Check often for updates.

Edmunds says it! Another 5 Star Rating for the 2010 Mazda 3

http://www.ocmazda.com/

Like its predecessor, the 2010 Mazda 3 looks to be one of the safer small cars on the road. Here you can watch NHTSA crash the sedan into a wall for the frontal-impact crash test -- once at full speed and then again in (somewhat) slow-mo.
NHTSA has issued a five-star rating to both the 2010 Mazda 3 sedan and hatchback based on the above crash test. No side-impact ratings, yet, though like almost every passenger car on the road, the 3 gets a four-star rollover rating.

New auto rules to transform U.S. fleet
New Obama rules will transform auto fleet

The Associated Press

Some soccer moms will have to give up hulking SUVs. Carpenters will still haul materials around in pickup trucks, but they will cost more. Nearly everybody else will drive smaller cars, and more of those will run on electricity. The higher mileage and emissions standards set by the Obama administration Tuesday, which begin to take effect in 2012 and are to be achieved by 2016, will transform the American car and truck fleet. The rules will bring new cars and trucks sold in the United States to an average of 35.5 miles per gallon, about 10 mpg more than today's standards. Passenger cars will be required to get 39 mpg; light trucks, 30 mpg. That means cars and trucks on American roads will have to become smaller, lighter and more efficient.
Eric Fedewa, vice president of global powertrain forecasting for the auto consulting firm CSM Worldwide in Northville, Mich., said the changes will make pickup trucks so much more expensive that they will be used almost exclusively for work. And instead of a minivan or SUV, more parents will haul their families in much smaller vehicles with three rows of seats – something more like the Mazda 5 small van, he said. The Mazda 5 gets about 28 mpg on the highway.“I think what you'll see is a lot more creativity in interior packaging,” Fedewa said. “You'll get more rows of seats where you traditionally had cargo space.”

OC REGISTER ARTICLE...MAZDA DEALER READY FOR A REVOLUTION

John Patterson admits that for prospective car buyers, going to a dealership can be a nightmare experience.
“People would rather go to a dentist,” he says, admitting that too often consumers have bad associations with going to dealerships, whether to buy a car or get service.

Patterson, president of Huntington Beach Mazda, hopes to change all that by providing an environment that his customers can actually be comfortable in.
The dealership just completed a $3 million renovation to become Orange County’s only — and just a handful in the nation — “Retail Revolution Store.” Call it the “anti-dealership,” if you will.
The ’70s-era building on Beach Boulevard that once was a Lincoln-Mercury dealership and which Patterson bought in 2007 now features bright colors, plenty of open space, free Wi-Fi access, a children’s play area, complimentary gourmet coffee, and a living-room-like area with a couch and large, flat-screen TV.
The dealer will also have on-site breakfast and lunch available for purchase to customers, the latter provided by Wahoo’s Fish Taco, whose owners Patterson is friends with.
“The whole basis is to provide creature comforts for our customers,” Patterson says.

IMPORTANT NOTICE REGARDING CALIFORNIA REGISTRATION FEES!

http://www.ocmazda.com/

Beat the California Registration Fee!
Scheduled increase will begin May 19th.

Save Hundreds in fees if you purchase before May 19th.

You may have seen or read about the increase in Automobile Registration Fees in the state of California. It's true and below is more detailed information. Don't panic, but do hurry. You have 30 days from today's date. The new fees will not go into effect until May 19. So if you are thinking about purchasing a car, doing so now will save you hundreds of dollars.

"California's Online Calculator Determines New License Fee Due on Vehicle Registration Renewals"

In an effort to help California motorists find out how the increased Vehicle License Fee (VLF) will affect the registration renewal for their vehicles, the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) will modify the online fee calculator to reflect the increase which will take effect on May 19, 2009. All vehicles with a registration renewal date of May 19, and thereafter, will be affected by the increase from 0.65 to 1.15 percent of the value of the vehicle. The calculator will be modified to reflect the change 60 days prior to the increase. The DMV will also mail registration renewal forms to customers approximately 60 days in advance of the renewal date. The online fee calculator increases customer convenience and saves time, making it a popular feature available at http://www.dmv.ca.gov/. It allows customers to compute not only the new VLF, but all other fees due for vehicle registration renewals and used vehicle purchases, as well as fees due on new and out-of-state vehicle registrations. Vehicle owners need only to provide the license plate and vehicle identification numbers, county of registration and zip code. The calculator will then display the amount of fees due to DMV, along with any penalties, transfer costs and use tax, if applicable. View the press release or visit the California DMV Web site for more details.

Road Test: 2010 Mazda3 Sedan
Larry Crane, Canadian Auto PressPublished: Tuesday, April 07, 2009
As the garage opens and light falls on the car's dramatic face, your first reaction is exotic–and sport; and a dynamic presence is evoked by the light continuing along the artfully sculptured sides and high aerodynamic tail. In the Mazda tradition the new 3 is equal parts driver's car and useful family hauler. The famous fact that more Mazdas are raced every weekend worldwide than any other brand, is drawn right down to the base of the marque.
Mazda3 Program Manager Yoshiyuki Maeda established ambitious goals for Mazda's most popular car line, "We were determined to advance the Zoom-Zoom driving experience to new heights because that unique feeling lies at the very heart of Mazda. On the heels of the original Mazda3's success, we aimed to again exceed the expectations of customers all over the world by a wide margin. This meant providing drivers with a sense of exhilaration whether they were in motion, seated in the Mazda3's cockpit, or enjoying its appearance from outside."
Key to the vision that leads Mazda's international team was the latest iteration of the company mantra "Sustainable Zoom-Zoom," having fun while doing good. A car that gives you a satisfying reward for having been behind the wheel for a few hours, and when its life is over a full 90-percent of it (up from 80-percent for the last generation Mazda3) will simply be made back into another one. Cool!
In the formula that created the new plan was a refinement in chassis engineering. Everything is improved by careful gauging and bonding, before welding, of recyclable metals. The resulting structure can include better-measured crumple zones around the passengers and at the same time offer a more rigid frame for predictable suspension geometry. Up front are modern struts in towers integrated into the unibody with structural adhesives that both stiffen and sound-deaden the area. The independent multi-link rear suspension hangs from a subframe both lighter and stiffer than its predecessor; subtle changes that make for crisper responses. We anxiously await the opportunity to prove them right. Even a modest family four-door Mazda is a disguised track star anxious for a chance to run.
All the chassis seriousness is a direct reaction to the joyful DOHC engine that delivers a responsive 148 horsepower at 6,500 rpm in MZR 2.0-litre form and 167 horsepower at 6,000 as a 2.5-litre. Both engines employ what Mazda calls advanced electronic throttle control and torque base control technology, for linear acceleration response to every change of throttle pedal pressure. So it's a kick to use. That kick is even friendlier when you see US EPA estimated 7.1 L/100 km highway mpg from the 2.0-litre in either 6-speed automatic or 5-speed manual guise, and 8.1 highway EPA rating from the 2.5-litre with either gearbox (we're using EPA here because it's much more accurate than Canada's behind-the-times EnerGuide rating system). And it's a joy to live with.
Since 2003, the current Mazda3 sold nearly 1.8 million vehicles in over 100 countries. It accounts for almost one in three Mazdas sold. Little of that success was driven by its racetrack ability. What Mazda delivers is handsome, useful, reliable transportation, beautifully finished and fun to drive.
That last bit is just for the cognocenti. Inside the new 3 is what can only be described as scaled-luxury appointments. Extraordinary seats for a car in this price category. No special skills are required to enjoy the elegantly clean and rational dashboard and central systems stack. An enormous amount of study went into the location and layout of the driver's workspace. Between the steering wheel and the shift lever are virtually all the civility controls. They offer little distraction from the work at hand. For the avid multi-tasker comes a Multi-information Display at centre-dash just below the windshield for navigation, trip computer, and what's up with my Bose 10-speaker Centerpoint surround-sound audio system?
There is also audio-integrated hands-free Bluetooth for your phone, a dock for your iPod and Sirius satellite radio is available. Effortless utility was the goal; an ambient tranquility was the point. With that in mind, even the lighting is interactive. As occupants enter, illumination is in the footwell and door handles; slowly the instrument cluster and centre stack of climate and audio controls begin to brighten; when something is touched everything lightens to function levels and the dual-zone climate systems begin to seek their presets.
If you are beginning to think this doesn't sound like an economy car, wait 'til you drive one. Remember, this is the company that gave us the Miata, perhaps the best affordable driver's car in history - and more cars racing every weekend...etc. Mazda has made itself the go-to company for fun on a budget
